The top baby girl names and top baby boy names in England and Wales have been revealed for 2025. There was no change when it came to the top baby names in 2025 for girls or boys.
Olivia remained the top baby girl name for the ninth year in a row, and was given to 2624 baby girls.
The name Muhammad is the most popular name for boys in the UK for the second year in a row, and was given to 5674 boys.
The 2025 list was recorded by the UK Office of National Statistics (ONS) from baby name data captured in 2024, the latest full year of recorded UK births.
Changes To The Top 10 Baby Names In The UK
While the top baby girl name remained the same this year, along with the name in second place – Amelia – the name Lily is now in third place, replacing the name Isla.
Florence jumped two places up to 6th, and the names Poppy and Elsie are now in the top ten (replacing Willow and Isabella).
The top three baby names for boys in 2025, Muhammed, Noah and Oliver, remain the same as last year. Arthur has gained two places in popularity, up to 4th, replacing George which is down to 6th. The only other change is the name Archie in the top ten, at number 10, replacing Henry which drops out of the top ten list.
New Entries To The Top UK Baby Name List
When it comes to new entries for the top baby boy names, the names Austin, Nathan, Vinnie and Yahya appeared in the top 100 list of baby names for boys in 2024.
For girls names, new entries to the top 100 list included Eloise, Nora, Myla, Rosa, Athena, Sara and Zoe.
Regional Differences In The Top UK Baby Name Lists
In terms of regional naming differences, Olivia was the most popular girls' name in seven out of nine regions in England and the most popular name in Wales.
Muhammad was the most popular boys' name in five out of nine regions in England and was ranked 57th in Wales.
How Is The UK Top Baby Name List Compiled?
The UK top baby name lists are compiled by the ONS (Office of National Statistics) from statistics of first names recorded when live births are registered in England and Wales each year. It is a legal requitement to register your baby’s name within 42 days of them being born.
To protect the confidentiality of individuals with uncommon baby names, the UK baby name lists only include names given to three or more babies in England and Wales as a whole.
