Noah returns as the most popular name for Scottish boys, overtaking the name Luca. Olivia is now the most popular girls name in Scotland, replacing the name Isla.
The list of popular baby names in Scotland was released by National Records of Scotland, from records of the first names of all newborn babies registered throughout 2024.
Changes to The Top 100 Baby Boy Names in 2025 in Scotland
Noah is now the top name for boys in Scotland, and was given to 366 boys in 2024. Noah first entered the top 100 Scottish boy name list in 2005 and has been the most popular name for boys three times since 2020.
Within the top 10 of boys name in Scotland, the biggest climber was the name Muhammad, which rose by nine places to second. Rory rose by three places to third and Theo rose by four places to fourth. Leo, Luca, Jack, Harris and Archie all lost places in the list of boys names, while Oliver remained the seventh most popular name.
Reggie, Myles and Callan rose by the largest number of places in the top 100. Reggie rose 57 places to joint 91st, Myles rose 41 places to 35th and Callan rose 36 places to joint 36th.
Changes to The Top Scottish Baby Girl Names
Olivia is now the top name for girls in Scotland, and was given to 266 girls in 2024. Olivia has been at the top of the chart of girls name seven times, and has been in first or second place since 2016. Olivia first entered the top 100 in the early 1990s and has gained in popularity every year, entering the top five in 2008.
Sophia rose by ten places to sixth and is now within the top girls names. Lily rose by seven places and is now fourth. Millie rose three places to number 5. Amelia, Emily, Ella and Charlotte also lost places but are still within the top ten most popular girls names in Scotland.
In the top 100 girls names, notable changes were for Eliza, which rose 118 places to joint 79th, Romy, which rose 89 places to joint 63rd, and Nora, which rose 80 places to joint 72nd.
Overall Trends With Baby Names In Scotland
In 2024 Olivia and Noah were the most common names for girls and boys to mothers aged under 25. However, for mothers aged 35 and over, the most common names were Finn and Emily.
Despite Olivia and Noah topping the chart this year, David and Emma were the most popular names for boys and girls in Scotland overall during the period 1974 to 2024. Over the past five decades, more than 40,000 boys were named David, and over 24,000 girls were named Emma.
The number of different names given to boys has been increasing year-to-year with a new all-time high in 2024. The number of unique names, names not given to any other boys that year, has also increased. The same pattern was observed for girls’ names and the variety of names given to girls remains much greater that boys.
