Do you struggle to cut your child’s nails? I vividly remember the trauma of doing this when mine was a newborn; we’d always have to wait until she was asleep. It’s a big worry for most new parents, and it doesn't get much easier as your child gets older - and more and more wriggly.
Tom Pellereau, winner of The Apprentice in 2011 and business partner of Lord Alan Sugar, no less, has come up with an innovative new product to help out parents. The Nipper Clipper is a set of baby nail clippers combined with an app you use to distract your child while you do it. Parents are able to trim the nails safely and correctly, and no-one gets fired.
We were invited along to the launch event this morning in central London, at a pop-up children’s nail bar in Covent Garden. Both Tom and Lord Sugar were there to talk about the product (he refused to discuss the current series of The Apprentice - so no spoilers here). The Nipper Clipper has a ‘spy hole’ - a circle cut out of the top that allows you to see exactly what you’re doing, and a scissor action that gives greater control over the cutting action. But the real innovation is the Timmy Tickle Baby app - a sensory programme designed to distract the baby while you clip their little claws. You have to hand it to Tom; this is a clever idea.
But how did he nail down the concept? Tom previously launched the Stylfile nail range for adults, and saw this as a natural extension. He was about to become a father himself - his incredibly tiny, two-week-old son was at the event with him - and says ‘“I saw a gap in the market for a nail clipper that can cut babies’ nails in a safe and controlled environment.”
Do you have any good tips for tear-free nail trimming? Mine would be to feed them while you do it. It works a treat. Make sure you also check out our list ofnewborn essentials, and our new theme for this month.
The Nipper Clipper retails at around £9.99 and will be available from Amazon, Sainsburys, Boots and Mothercare. We were invited along to the launch event this morning, and given a free Nipper Clipper to take away and try out for ourselves. The bad puns in this post are all mine.
