What does ‘healthy’ mean to you?

From feeling relaxed and rested, to being able to run for 30 minutes non-stop - connotations and associations surrounding the word ‘healthy’ rarely conjure up the same meaning for two different people.

For some people, a healthy attitude to life might mean running 10km three times a week, whilst for others, healthy might mean relaxing and switching off from their busy day.

Why does healthy mean different things to different people?

With this in mind, we asked 4 experts, ranging from Personal Trainers to Holistic Practitioners and Health Coaches, to discover just how many definitions of healthy there are.

Health is all about living the way you want

Rachael Pontillo, nutrition educator and aesthetic practitioner from holisticallyhaute.com suggests that healthy does not always have to mean pounding the pavements, or lifting weights. She instead defines ‘healthy’ as:

The ability to live your life with the freedom to work and play the way you want, without being hindered in any way physically, mentally, or emotionally.”

Intuitive health. alongside knowing when rest is required. is something she mentions further on in her explanation:

“Having the ability to intuitively know what your body needs and what it doesn't, and also knowing when it's time to rest and recharge"

Health is all about balance

David Archer, a personal trainer from Precision Fitness , explains that emotional, physical and mental balance are two key elements when it comes to explaining exactly what healthy is.

“Health can be defined in terms of emotional, physical and mental balance. For most, including myself, I identify health as a balance of all the pieces of my life that promote the feeling of progression”

Listen to your body to be healthy - health encompasses more than just food and nutrition

Health Coach, Emily Mcartor from Emily Empowers Health Coaching  suggests that health is a journey that evolves and changes throughout life.

“Being healthy is a journey that is as biologically unique as your DNA. Essentially, "healthy" is up to each person individually and healthy for me is not going to be healthy for you.”

Nicola goes on to mention the synergy between food, body and brain and how these three constitute a feeling of wellness.

“Healthy for me, is about embracing the whole aspect; the food, the body and the mindset. When all 3 aspects are in tune then we really are at the peak of our wellness.”

A positive attitude leads to positive outcomes, when it comes to health

The recurring theme which has become apparent when speaking to our experts, is that health is a combination of both physical and mental factors which all contribute to an overall ‘healthy’ attitude to life.

Candy Morehouse, over 50’s clean eating and nutrition blogger at candyssweetlife.com, leaves us with the following statement:

“Healthy is knowing what I put in my body, being able to identify the ingredients I eat and paying mindful attention to the food I prepare. Health is a positive attribute with me every single day”.
