As our window onto the world, eyes are certainly worth looking after. The following simple precautions can help you maintain good vision.
- Have your eyes checked every four to five years before 40 years of age and every two years after 40.
- Protect your self from ultraviolet light. Wear good quality sunglasses on bright days - the wrap-around types are best. A large brimmed hat helps too.
- Keep your hands clean - this will reduce your chance of infection, particularly if you wear contact lenses. Also avoid touching the eye too often to keep down the risk of infection.
- Wear only clean contact lenses. Always make sure the contact lenses are properly disinfected before inserting into the eyes. Improperly storing contact lenses can lead to infection of the eye.
- Use over-the-counter artificial tears when eyes are dry or irritated.
- Wear protective glasses when doing household repairs, using chemicals or playing sports. This can help prevent serious eye injury caused by dust, flying debris, or a fast tennis ball.
- If you think you have something in your eye, never try to remove it with a fingertip or fingernail. Blink until it moves near the tear duct, and remove it with a soft tissue.
- Always pick up sticks, stones, or other debris before mowing the lawn.
- Replace makeup every six months.
- Use opaque goggles to avoid burns from sunlamps.
- Ask your eye doctor, physician or pharmacist about the effects of any prescription or non-prescription drugs on your vision.
- A healthy diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables can help maintain eye health.
