Professor Hagen Tronnier, author of a recent study on Betatene, a natural beta carotene-rich supplement found in Perfectil^®, commented, “As well as providing colour to plants, carotenoids such as beta carotene give them vital protection against the harmful effects of the sun. Independent research, including my own, has shown that beta carotene has a similar effect in humans, giving a sun protection factor of between 2-4.” ¹

Experts believe carotenoids may help protect skin in three ways. First, they act as antioxidants in a similar fashion to vitamins A, C, and E, helping to reduce damage caused by free radicals. Second, they appear to provide a “parasol” effect in which UV light is scattered off the skin, rather as if it were bouncing off the top of an umbrella. Finally, they help to counteract UV-induced alteration of the immune system. UV exposure actually depletes levels of carotenoids in the skin.

Professors Harald Gollnick and Hans Biesalski, authors of an earlier study on these powerful antioxidants, concluded that “Pre-supplementation with moderate doses of beta-carotene before and during natural sunlight exposure, combined with topical sunscreens, is more effective than sunscreen alone. From our results, the use of such a combination for the general health of populations at risk, e.g., before UV-exposure during vacation, would seem advisable”.²
