Why is maintaining a healthy weight important?
For some, weight loss is an issue of body image but for others it is a health issue. Being overweight or obese can affect nearly every part of your body and can lead to increased risk of a number of serious medical conditions including heart health problems. You're also more likely to suffer from joint problems, back pain and sleeping difficulties. Just a 10% reduction in weight through sensible eating and exercise can make a significant improvement to general wellbeing.
What is my ideal weight?
In order to assess what is healthy, it would be misleading to just rely on your body weight measurement as body shapes and frame sizes vary. The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of weight relative to height to determine if a person is overweight. Research has shown that people within a certain range of body size tend to live the longest and enjoy the best health. You can check whether you have a healthy weight for your height using our BMI calculator.

Ideal BMI 18.5-25

N.B. BMI is not as accurate if you are an athlete or very muscular (muscle weighs more than fat), as it can push you into a higher BMI category despite having a healthy level of body fat. It is also not accurate for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and people who are frail.
